DIY: The Wonderment of Holiday Wreaths

Materials

  • 14″ wreath ring (available at craft stores)
  • About 25 balsam fir branches, 24″ long
  • Garden pruners
  • Floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Floral sticks
  • Ribbon
  • Decorations such as bells, ornaments, lights, or pine, cedar or holly clippings

Instructions

  1. Clip fir brush into wreath-sized pieces. It is recommended that you snip off and keep only the “arms,” and discard the main branch.
  2. Secure the floral wire to the ring, then start forming small bunches of brush. Use 3-4 pieces, starting with a larger piece in the back and then layering on smaller pieces.
  3. Twist the wire around the cut ends 2-3 times to secure each small bunch to the ring.
  4. Continue to layer bunches around the frame, until you get back to where you began the wreath, making sure to stick the ends of the final bunch under the top of the first.
  5. Before cutting the wire, make a loop for easy hanging.
  6. Use pruners to snip any pieces of brush that are too long.
  7. Decorate as desired with ribbon or other decor secured to wreath with floral sticks and wire.

Did You Know?

Many of the beautifully decorated holiday wreaths that adorn the doors of Colonial Williamsburg buildings are made completely from natural materials. Commonly used items are apples, cloves, dried flowers, oyster shells and cotton bolls.
